It’s thin, sleek, and light, and at least one Macworld editor is eyeballing it with BTP-APJ1 laptop battery interest. Nevertheless, the Asus Eee PC 1008HA netbook is no MacBook. Asus seems to be spitting out new additions to its netbook line faster than I can count. (Who can forget the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, the Asus Eee PC 1000H 80G XP, and the Asus Eee PC T91? It ain’t easy, since all three came out in the past six months or so.)

Nevertheless, the company’s designers continue laptop battery to find ways to refine their machines. The proof is in this new $420 (as of May 26, 2009) netbook.
Under its frosty exterior, the system sports up-to-the-minute netbook innards: an Intel laptop battery Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth, 802.11n, and a three-cell BTP-AQJ1 battery (we’re still awaiting battery life test results from the PC World Test Center).

The keyboard is 92 percent of full size, with a good layout, and it feels big and comfortable. The buttons were firm and large enough to type on easily. Even the metallic mouse-button bar was reasonably secure–and I especially like Asus’s treatment of the touchpad. Instead of using dainty trim or a different material to indicate that you’re within the strike zone, this model incorporates tiny bumps. As aresult, the netbook looks as though it has a mild rash. But more to the point, it feels really good. Navigating Web sites BTP-ARJ1 laptop battery was a piece of cake.
To accommodate the 1008HA’s thin-and-light design, Asus had to drop a few ports–and in the process it made an interesting design move: In a hidden compartment on the underside of the netbook sits a VGA adapter dongle. When you need it, you simply pop it out and plug it into the mini-USB port on one side of the laptop battery machine. This clever move retains the functionality while reducing the size, and it minimizes the chance of losing dongles. (Another smart tactic is evident in the Sony VAIO P netbook, which sneaks the VGA dongle onto its power supply…but I digress.) Otherwise, on the 1008HA you’ll find the usual Asus Laptop Battery retinue of connection options hiding behind flaps: an ethernet hookup, two USB ports, an SD Card reader, and headphone and microphone jacks.

As for the 10.1-inch screen, it looks sufficiently sharp and crisp at its native 1024-by-600-pixel resolution. (You can scale this setting higher in an emulated mode.) Colors pop when you tilt the display at just the right angle–as is the case with most laptops and netbooks. Also typically, the screen’s glossy coating will leave you squinting when you try to view it in broad daylight.

How does it perform? What’s the final performance score for the 1008HA? We don’t have a final answer yet. But stay tuned. As soon as A42-A3 laptop battery our Test Center wraps up testing, we’ll update this review

One of the great things about rounding up a group of like-applications is that after a while it often becomes laptop battery obvious which is the best among those apps — it’s the one you keep returning to, to "test" some more. Which is what happened when I was assigned to test a trio of iPhone trivia games. I kept returning to ""Ben Stein: It’s Trivial. The $3 game from Griptonite Games is the most fun of the three I tested. And it seems to be literally less trivial than the other games. The questions and answers are interesting, and there’s a goal, achievable by any player: steal Ben Stein’s stuff.

You steal his stuff by accumulating points, and you accumulate points by answering questions in four categories: pop culture, natural wonders, sports, and "random Steinage." Along the way there are opportunities to win bonus points by answering certain questions TravelMate 4000 laptop battery correctly, and these points accumulate into the hundreds of thousands. Stein’s stuff is random, and has different point values: a gazebo costs only 125,000 points, while a space capsule is 275,000 and a treasure chest tops the list at 1,000,000 points. There are three unpriced items: Ben’s glasses, Ben’s suit, and Ben’s mansion.

Clearly, your mission is to totally wipe Ben out. The questions get progressively harder as the game laptop battery progresses, and you can win extra points based on how quickly you answer. The game is accompanied by circus-like music, and a bobble-head version of Stein makes facial expressions and sarcastic comments on your answers. These get repetitive and tiring after an hour or so of play, but you have the option to turn off the "sound effects" and music.

According to the game’s developers, It’s Trivial includes more than 1,200 questions, and additional "theme packs" are on the way. This number of questions isn’t enough to TravelMate 2300laptop battery prevent repeats after an hour or so of play. More are needed in the regular version of the game to move it from the "very good" to "excellent" category.

Besides the terrific questions, Ben Stein: It’s Trivial has also been well-produced. It has a slick, intuitive, and fun interface.

Mr. Trivia from Iron Square is not so much fun. The $2 game includes more than 700 questions–not many, considering the speed of play; at the same time, it boasts "300+ faux prizes," which are silly and tiresome (A year at boot camp. Books on Objective C programming. A year’s supply of lipstick. Does it matter?).
Unfortunately, many of the questions Aspire 1680 laptop battery demonstrate that trivia can be, well, too trivial, resembling the trick queries some teachers ask on pop quizzes to distinguish between who merely did the assigned reading from those who took detailed notes.

"It took how many men to build the Taj Mahal?" (22,000, 33,000, or 44,000) Sometimes, a lot is just a lot.

"When was the Kingdoms of Korea founded?" (45 BC, 50 BC, or 56 BC) Sometimes, it’s hard to figure out why the laptop battery exact year matters, even trivially.

Other times, Mr. Trivia gets the questions wrong:

"Who was the first President (sic) of the Republican Party?" (Lincoln is the answer; he was the first Republican to become president, but the party itself has no Aspire 1410 laptop battery president. It’s not a trivial distinction.)

On the positive side, Mr. Trivia did lead me to philosophize on the difference between "good" and "bad" trivia. Ben Stein’s questions and answers often led me to think, "Hmm, that’s interesting," or "Wow, I didn’t know that!" Mr. Trivia’s questions and answers most often led me to think, "Who cares?," "Does it really matter?," or "That’s either the wrong question or the wrong answer."

A little proofreading and fact-checking could have gone a long way toward making Mr. Trivia a decent game. Iron Square also offers a free lite version with fewer questions; Miss Trivia, a drink trivia game that comes in both paid and free editions; and a $1 kids’ game with 250-plus questions aimed at the 4- to 10-year-old set.

With more than 3,000 questions in nine TravelMate 4500 laptop battery categories, Trivia Master is the quantitative leader among iPod trivia games. The categories in this $2 game from Mike Shilinski are general knowledge, entertainment, arts and literature, sports, science and nature, geography, history and politics, and food and drink. You can choose any category you’d like at any time, and each category has its own leaderboard, where you can record your top scores. The game also has, in theory, online leaderboards, which would enable you to compare your trivia chops to others. When I attempted to access them, by touching the game’s "Online Leaderboards" button on its startup screen, the game consistently crashed. (The game’s App Store page indicates that a fix is on the way.)

Trivia Master play is simple and straightforward: each round consists of 10 questions in a category, and you can score up to 1,000 pointslaptop battery for each question. The number LCBTP03003 laptop battery of points you get for a correct answer decreases by 50 a second, meaning if you get a right answer in five seconds, you accumulate 750 points. If it takes 10 seconds, you get 500 points. At the end of a round, the game is over, and your total is added up. That’s all there is to it. I found Trivia Master’s questions to be not quite as interesting as Ben Stein’s, but for the most part the questions are thoughtful and the distinction between answers meaningful. The interface is also simple but well-produced: this is a game with which you can happily pass five minutes, but it’s not addictive, like Ben Stein: It’s Trivial, the champ of this particular trivia showdown.

Mr. Trivia and Trivia Master are compatible with any iPhone or iPod Aspire 1300 laptop battery touch running the iPhone 2.x software update. Ben Stein: It’s Trivial runs on the 2.2 update.

Researchers have developed a technology that could allow laptops laptop battery to wake up instantly from a shut-down state without draining battery life the way sleep states do.

University researchers have built ferroelectric material — commonly found on smartcards — on silicon, which could allow certain transistors to retain information after power is shut off. Scientists from Pennsylvania State University, Cornell University and Northwestern University are involved in the research.

The new findings could save users time by instantly booting laptops to their state when they were shut laptop battery down. For example, a transistor in the laptop will be able to retain the BTP-44A3 laptop battery state of a Word document on shutdown, and instantly reload the same state on reboot.

"It would be instant-on, meaning as soon as the power comes back on, your computer would be in exactly the same state it was when you turned it off and ready for action," said Darrell Schlom, principal investigator and professor at the department of materials science and engineering at Pennsylvania State University.

Quick-boot capabilities are enabled in laptops BTP-550P laptop battery and most mobile devices, but many are unable to recreate shutdown states. Laptops usually never reboot back to their shutdown state, unless they are in sleep mode, which drains battery power. In essence, ferroelectric materials could wake up laptops from sleep mode, but without drawing any battery power.

The research could pave the way for a new generation of lower-power, higher-speed memory devices, Schlom laptop battery said. For laptop users, it could reduce the time to load an OS from storage devices like hard drives. The ferroelectric material could also retain data in case power is lost.

The research revolves around building ferroelectric transistors — which can retain data in any electric state — on hybrid transistors. Ferroelectric materials are found in smartcards used today in subway, ATM and fuel cards.

The researchers took strontium titanate, a variant of the ferroelectric material used in smartcards, and deposited it on silicon, putting it in a state where it could retain information even BTP-73E1 laptop battery when power is off. The new findings cut the intervening layers that made it difficult to put the material on silicon.

Typically when power is turned off, voltages disappear from transistors, which have to be recreated when power is turned on. To recreate them, the relevant information is loaded from nonvolatile storage mediums like hard drives, which takes time. The ferroelectric transistors retain magnetization when the electric field is turned off, allowing it to retain data.

The technology will load operating systems differently BATCL50L laptop battery from existing memory technologies like DRAM and storage technologies like hard drives and solid-state drives, Schlom said. Ferroelectric transistors conceptually differ in the way data is loaded and retained, Schlom said.

Benefits of ferroelectric transistors were first realized in 1955 by scientists at Bell Labs, Schlom said. Though the recent findings are a major step ahead, additional research is needed to build an actual ferroelectric transistor to make instant-on computing a reality, Schlom said. He couldn’t provide a timeline for when such transistors would be built.

The BlackBerry universe is rife with useful applications — apps that will let you check your BTP-60A1 laptop battery bank accounts, buy and sell stocks, lead you home when you are lost, and some that just make using a BlackBerry a more satisfying experience. The following applications do not fall in this category. Instead, these tools are purely for your enjoyment. (Or, if you need a bathroom in a hurry.)

Sometimes you’re away from home and you get a call. Oh yes, it’s nature calling. And you’re in unfamiliar territory. What to do, what to do. Call up the remarkable, and free, application called, "SitOrSquat"!

Need to find a toilet? Like, right TravelMate 240 laptop battery NOW? SitOrSquat will use your GPS (or you can enter an address manually) to locate a toilet. The application has star-based ratings to determine the toilet’s quality. After relief, you can rate the toilet. You can also add toilets that are not in the application’s database.

Now, suppose you are out in the middle of nowhere, at night, and there isn’t an available restroom for miles. You decide to use the "squat" method. How will you find your way into the dark woods without tripping down a hill, landing in a stream and ruining your suit (this one’s from my ‘real stories’ file)? Enter Flashlight! for BlackBerry. For just $1.99, this application will turn your BlackBerry BTP-52EWlaptop battery Storm into a portable flashlight. See? Not just a clever name. You are also able to use this application as a mirror (to spruce up after your excursion). Flashlight! will allow your Storm to stay lit for up to 30 minutes. So don’t dawdle too long.

Falling down a hill is a pretty funny story to tell your friends. But what could make it even better? That’s right: sound effects. Link-two has not only developed the aforementioned Flashlight!, but they have taken the time to create the Fart Machine for BlackBerry. Need I BTP-63D1 laptop battery say more? No? Phew. (Except, hurry. FartMachine is costs just $.99 through the end of May, then the price shoots to $2.99)

If your rather base sense of humor doesn’t win your audience over, you may need to rely on some standard humor. If you’re like me and can’t remember jokes to save your life, fear not. Link-two has once again come to the rescue with JokeJukeBox. For just $1.49, you’ll have enough lawyer, blonde and potty jokes to convince your friends you are, indeed, Shecky Greene.

Are there more apps like this out there? Please share your findings BTP-42C1 laptop battery with me.

Note that these steps correspond with decision points on the flowchart and are reached directly by clicking on the diamond symbols. The text below cannot be read sequentially.

Needs AC Adapter to boot? The first step in troubleshooting your inspiron A1079 battery is determining whether it can hold enough charge to boot the notebook. Will the laptop power up and run on the battery, or does the AC adapter which doubles as the laptop battery charger need to be plugged in? Modern notebooks usually have a whole array of status LEDs that will tell you if the laptop senses good power coming from the battery charger and whether or not the battery is charging. Unfortunately, there’s no universal standard for these LEDs, their colors or their actions. Note also that we’re using the term "boot" rather loosely here. If the laptop powers up on battery, you can hear the fans and the laptop battery drives, your troubleshooting problem lies elsewhere.

Life Of Battery Too Short? This is the main problem laptop owners complain about, and often for good cause. Older laptops using Ni-Cad and early Ni-MH inspiron 6400 batteries often ran for 2.5 to 3.5 hours when brand new, but within a month or so, would barely keep the notebook powered up for an hour. Newer laptops using Ni-MH and Li-ION batteries are much better, often holding onto a three hour life through hundreds of charge and discharge cycles. The first line of defense against complaints about battery life by the manufacturers is always, "Did you charge and operate the battery according to the manual?" Unfortunately, different laptop manufacturers seem to disagree over how to best treat batteries of the same technology, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the differences extend to different models from the same A1078 manufacturer.

If the laptop’s Dell D610 battery life has been slowly degrading over time, it’s probably operating more or less in accordance with plan, but if you find the operating life shortened by more than 15% or 20% within the first few months, there’s probably something wrong. Batteries of all technologies can be "trained" to perform poorly through non-ideal usage patterns, but the Li-ION battery technology is pretty resistant, and as long as you run them all the way down once a month or so, you can probably prevent any serious charging memory issues.

Is Battery New? Purchasers of brand-new A1148 laptops are often surprised to find the battery is dead, or runs down very quickly. Even if the battery was fully charged when the laptop was boxed for shipment, that box may have been sitting in a warehouse for six months or a year before you purchased it in a store, more than enough time for a notebook battery to self discharge to an appreciable degree, even if it’s not being drawn upon. If the battery isn’t new, and you just received the laptop as a hand-me-down or purchased it second hand, there’s no reason to expect that a short Ibook G4 battery life is due to anything other than an aged battery. You can try to recondition the battery (see the laptop manufacturer website for for software that may be available), but odds are the M6091 battery simply can’t hold a charge the way it did when it was new.

User Condition Powerbook G4 Battery? Some manufacturers may condition the battery before installation in the laptop, others expect you to read the owners manual instructions and do it yourself in the first few days you own the laptop. The most general procedure is to charge the battery fully before use (leaving it on the AC battery charger overnight is best), and then to run exclusively on battery until the battery is discharged. Some brands suggest you run until the operating system warns of low battery life remaining, which could be anywhere from 10% to 3% remaining on standard settings. Others recommend that you run the laptop until it shuts itself down. This doesn’t mean that you have to sit there working for three or four hours, you can run the battery down over multiple sessions over multiple days. The important thing is not to plug the AC power adapter back in and start recharging the battery until it is completely run down. The condition BTP-43D1 process generally requires you to go through this cycle three times in a row.

Runs Always With battery? If the owners manual for your notebook suggests removing the battery when plugged in for prolonged periods, doing so may greatly prolong the battery life in terms of both charge cycles and years. Personally, I tend to be lazy and just leave the battery in all the time, despite the fact I almost always work plugged in. The battery life on the first couple Toshiba’s I owned dropped down to a half hour or so of running time within a few months my buying them, so it may have been my fault. Li-ION battery are much more friendly to poor power management habits, but you should run them down to TravelMate 220 empty once a month to keep them from developing a memory.

Battery conditioning means training the individual Macbook Pro battery battery cells into a pattern of giving as much power as they can and accepting the largest charge that they can. It would take an advanced chemistry text and a person much smarter than I to describe the underlying reasons for battery memory, and the techniques for best charging and storing batteries sometimes contradict one another. Once a laptop battery pack is conditioned, you may still need to run it all the way down once a month for best performance, especially if you normally work with the laptop plugged in. It’s important to read the owners manual section on battery life, because different models ship with different battery technologies, and the best practices to extend the BTP-58A1 battery life may not be the same.

Microsoft NAP is an effective network gatekeeper for Windows endpoints, but initial configuration is laptop battery complex, policies are basic, and reporting is absent. NAP is best used as a core technology deployed in combination with others for a more complete, manageable, and scalable solution.

The universe of policy-based networking and systems management has evolved over the past few years, and the standards first created by the Trusted Computing Group, Cisco, and Microsoft have merged to create a generalized view of managing and enforcing policy. Although more capable and more polished solutions are available, Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP) will undoubtedly be the primary such technology in use in all-Windows environments, even with its limitations.

NAP comprises client and server PowerBook G3 laptop battery subsystems with an enforcement architecture based on 802.1X, DHCP, or VPNs together with VLAN assignment within the network to isolate devices when appropriate. NAP services are provided in Windows Server 2008, with Windows Server 2008 R2 adding a few capabilities to the NAP support.

[ The Napera N24 network access control appliance brings NAP services to Windows and Mac endpoints -- sans Windows Server 2008 -- and it couldn't be easier to deploy. See the Test Center's review. ]

Client support is included in Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), and the Windows 7 Release Candidate. These client PowerBook G4 laptop battery services provide posture gathering and reporting to Windows Server 2008 for enforcement and remediation decisions. The NAP components include the posture of the device in a way similar to Windows Security Center, with system update, anti-virus, firewall, and other security status reported back.

The NAP services then analyze the overall posture of each device, match that posture to the NAP policies in the Network Policy Server (NPS), and facilitate enforcement as outlined by those policies. NAP provides roughly the same access control services as third-party NAC solutions we’ve tested, but without many of the bells and whistles those solutions provide.

NAP in R2
Microsoft continues to develop new PowerBook G4 15inch laptop battery features for NAP and related security functions. A number of the improvements in Windows Server 2008 R2 make NAP deployment smoother: specifically the automated setup of the logging database, and multiple out-of-the-box configurations for the System Health Validator (SHV).
NAP requires the setup of multiple databases for administration and management of the overall system, one of which is the logging database. Prior to Windows Server 2008 R2, the logging database required extensive SQL-based configuration. This setup has been automated in R2, completely relieving the administrator of an onerous task.

Similarly, prior to R2, Windows Server 2008 provided only one SHV configuration, meaning that wholesale changes to the system health requirements had to be made universally. Now you can apply different policies based on a specific configuration of the SHV. For example, systems internal to your network may require that only the anti-virus component is current, while A1012 laptop battery systems connected via VPN may require both anti-virus and antispyware be active.

In addition, when used with Windows 7, R2 provides a streamlined remote access facility, simplifying remote connectivity and securing Remote Workspace, Presentation Virtualization, and Remote Desktop Services Gateway sessions.

NAP in the lab
As for previous reviews M8511 laptop battery (see "NAC smorgasbord: Four ways to police the nework [2]" and "Sophos NAC is a good start [3]"), we examined NAP’s ability to handle typical scenarios, including guest access, rogue devices, and non-Windows devices. We also examined the enforcement methods available natively with NAP. We installed Windows Server 2008 as the network core and configured both Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3 devices on the network. Our network also included a Mac OS X client and a printer, though NAP does nothing with non-Windows devices. It only tests the posture, or "health status," of Windows systems.

While configuring NAP was straightforward, it was also complex, requiring a long list of supporting services to be installed and configured. Even my simple deployment required several hours to configure, due to the prerequisites for 802.1X on Windows Server 2008, including the RADIUS server, certificates, and the enforcement M8244 laptop battery clients.

You use the Network Policy Server, a component of Windows Server 2008, to configure NAP policies. As with other NAC solutions, the policies use the client posture to determine the arguments for a policy decision. The policy then triggers enforcement in terms of network access granted. Enforcement of the client status is by 802.1X and VLAN assignment or by DHCP lease enforcement.

Apple Wednesday confirmed that it will charge US$179 to swap out the new MacBook laptop battery Pro’s built-in battery if it fails, but said that the swap would be a same-day service at its retail stores.

Apple’s new top-of-line MacBook Pro, a $2,799 "unibody" laptop that features a 17-in. screen, relies on a lithium-polymer battery that the company claims can power the laptop for up to eight hours, and be recharged at least 1,000 times before it needs replacing. Apple unveiled the new laptop Tuesday during its last-ever keynote at the Macworld Conference & Expo.

To get that much battery in the MacBook Pro, Apple had to forgo a user-replaceable A1175 battery.

"The battery is going to last dramatically longer, so it will likely be years before you need to replace it," an Apple spokeswoman maintained in an e-mail Wednesday. On Tuesday Apple estimated that the battery will last approximately five years under normal use.

"[But] you can have the battery replaced at any Apple Store or Apple-authorized reseller," she continued. "The replacement battery is priced at $179, which includes installation of the new battery and environmentally-responsible disposal of the old A1185 battery."

The swap will be done as a same-day service at Apple’s own stores and at authorized dealers. Customers can also schedule an appointment at the former through Apple’s Genius Bar site .

User replaceable batteries for Apple’s other laptops cost significantly less than the $179 swap-out fee. Apple, for instance, sells M9324 batteries for its MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks for $129, while other dealers, such as the "Laptops for Less" site, price them between $99 and $109, depending on the model.

One analyst Tuesday said that the lack of a user-replaceable battery would get a thumbs down from some buyers. "For some users, absolutely [the non-removable battery] will be a problem," said Ezra Gottheil of Technology Business Research Inc. "[But] I don’t think this is a terribly large number [of people]. For most, it will just be a cost-benefit problem."

Apple encountered resistance in mid-2007 to the iPhone’s non-removable battery, with some of the complaints centering around the $79 swap-out fee that the company charged customers. In fact, within a month of the iPhone’s debut, New York state asked Apple M8403 laptop battery to change the design to let consumers replace their own batteries. Nothing came of New York’s request, however.

The new MacBook Pro isn’t the only Apple laptop with a non-removable battery. The MacBook Air also has one.

Apple is taking pre-orders for the new 17-in. MacBook Pro at its online store, but will not ship the M7318 laptop battery until the end of the month.

PC World — Wireless access anywhere: That’s the promise of 3G broadband data laptop battery connections. And in most areas, that’s what I enjoyed with the T-Mobile WebConnect USB Laptop Stick. The device is $50, after a $200 discount as of 5/11/09; the discount requires a two-year service contract, and monthly service is $60.

The WebConnect is the first data device for T-Mobile’s nascent 3G HSDPA network. I have to say it’s one of the most svelte USB data sticks I’ve seen. Manufactured for T-Mobile by Huawei Technologies, the WebConnect is slim and lightweight; it barely made a Presario 1200 laptop battery bulge in my laptop’s neoprene sleeve. It’s also among the few designs I’ve seen with a hinged USB connector that tucks away inside the stick. When I used the device, I appreciated that design elegance–unlike other wireless broadband devices I’ve used, this one didn’t weigh down my laptop, nor did it cause any imbalance or awkwardness. The stick also offers 8GB of storage, so I could use it for transporting data, too.

Installation was as simple as sliding my SIM card into the WebConnect and then plugging it into my PC. At that point the stick automatically began to install the T-Mobile Connection Manager software.

My experience with the software was mixed, though. The launcher is handy, and not nearly as obtrusive as some of the others I’ve tried. But I was disappointed to see Presario 1800 laptop battery that it initially defaulted to connecting to Wi-Fi (for hotspots or any Wi-Fi connection); I had to manually select the Broadband setting each time I launched the Connection Manager, and I often experienced a delay before it would connect to the 3G network. A recent firmware update improved things but only slightly.

The software also stumbled when I wandered afield Presario 700 laptop battery from a metropolitan area with T-Mobile’s data network. I had no issues with the WebConnect in San Francisco, Dallas, or New York; but, in Lincoln, Nebraska, I found that the device refused to connect to either a 3G or T-Mobile EDGE network (it’s supposed to step down to EDGE automatically in the absence of 3G, but it didn’t even do that in Lincoln). My lack of connection was a network problem, but the software simply hung while continuing to search for a connection for 5 minutes, and it didn’t alert me that it was unable to find a 3G or EDGE network.
Aside from the connection glitches, I also achieved mixed broadband speeds. In San Francisco, I routinely measured about 550 kbps for download speed and Presario 900 laptop battery about 330 kbps for upload speed (using Speakeasy’s broadband speed test). While those speeds match what I’ve seen for my AT&T Wireless 3G iPhone, they’re not as fast as 3G purportedly can be.

One neat–and extremely convenient–aspect of the connection software is that, if I kept Connection Manager open, it would resume my previous connection action after a short delay, no intervention needed. If I resumed the connection after bringing my laptop Presario 1700 laptop battery out of standby, for instance, or if I detached the WebConnect and then reattached it later, the Connection Manager would automatically rediscover the broadband connection I’d been using. That almost, but not quite, makes up for its initial lethargy.

All of the nits I point out here boil down to one reality: If you’re in a region covered by T-Mobile’s 3G broadband service, the WebConnect will serve you Armada E500 laptop battery well, in spite of its small annoyances.

The One Laptop Per Child project suffered a blow this week, with Chief Technology
Officer Mary Lou Jepsen quitting the nonprofit to start a laptop battery for-profit company
to commercialize technology she invented with OLPC.

Jepsen, who joined OLPC as its first employee in 2005 after Nicholas Negroponte
started the effort, will pursue an opportunity to chase after "her next
miracle in display technology," OLPC said in an e-mail sent on Sunday.

Jepsen was responsible for EVO N400c laptop battery hardware and display development for the rugged
and power-saving XO laptop, designed for use by children in developing countries.
Though the laptop has struggled to find buyers, it has been praised for its
innovative hardware features and environmentally friendly design.

Her last day with the organization is Dec. 31, though she will continue EVO N410c laptop battery consulting
with OLPC, according to the e-mail. Dec. 31 is also the end of OLPC’s Give
One Get One program, in which two XO laptops can be purchased for about
US$400, with a user getting one laptop and the other being donated.

Satisfied that XO laptops EVO N600C laptop battery were shipping in volume, Jepsen noted in an e-mail
that she was starting a for-profit company to commercialize some of the technologies
she invented at OLPC.

"I will continue to give OLPC product at cost, while providing commercial
entities products they would like at a profit," Jepsen wrote in an e-mail.

"I believe that the work I led in the design of the XO laptop is just
the first step in changing EVO N610C laptop battery computing," she wrote.

Powered by solar power, foot pedal or pull-string, the laptop doesn’t rely on an electrical outlet to run, making it useful for situations where power is unreliable or unavailable. The laptop consumes between 2 watts to 8 watts of electricity from a specially designed lithium-ferro phosphate battery depending on usage, compared to 40 watts on commercial laptops depending on usage.

The laptop’s battery lasts up to 21 hours because of custom-designed, efficient
power-saving features implemented at the hardware and software level. Batteries
in commercial laptops may explode at high temperatures, while XO’s batteries
can run and recharge in temperatures around 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees
Celsius), Jepsen said in earlier interview.

OLPC is also designing a cow-powered
generator that works by hooking EVO N620C laptop battery cattle up to a system of belts and pulleys.

For connectivity, the laptop has mesh-networking features for Internet access

Countering the netbook craze, Hewlett-Packard on Tuesday introduced a thin and light laptop battery laptop, the Pavilion DV2Z, which will deliver full PC functionality at a competitive price.

The laptop will offer more processing laptop battery power and graphics capabilities than its predecessor, the Pavilion DV2, which was launched in January. It will be powered by Advanced Micro Devices’ new dual-core Neo chip, an upgrade from the single-core Neo chip in the original DV2.

The laptop will include a 12.1-inch screen and weigh around 3.81 pounds (1.7 kilograms). It will laptop battery be around an inch at its thinnest point. HP didn’t provide an estimated ThinkPad Z61t battery life for the laptop.

Users will get stronger graphics with the AMD’s Radeon 3200 integrated graphics, which will be part of the Congo platform of chips. That should enable faster decoding of high-definition content and provide a better overall multimedia experience than traditional netbooks.

HP will provide up to 500GB of storage, and offer optical drive options like Blu-ray with the laptop. The company is also offering a separate graphics card as an option. The company said orders for the laptop can be placed at HP’s Web site, but didn’t 40Y6793 laptop battery provide an actual ship date.

Priced starting at US$599, the strong features make DV2Z a giant upgrade over netbooks, which are typically priced between $300 and $500 and offer limited functionality. AMD puts thin and light laptops like the DV2Z in the category of consumer PCs called "ultrathin" laptops, which provide PC functionality at affordable prices without compromising on features.

Ultrathin laptops are as portable as netbooks and provide adequate performance to run most applications, like high-definition multimedia, casual gaming and FRU 92P1125 laptop battery productivity applications.

The chip company contends that netbooks, though cheap, provide limited functionality, while ultraportables like MacBook Air are too expensive, with prices above US$1,500. AMD faces competition in the ultrathin space from rival Intel, which announced new single-core chips for ultrathin laptops last week. Those chips have been adopted by PC makers like Lenovo and MSI.

HP also launched the Pavilion DV3T laptop, which is FRU 92P1121 laptop battery priced starting at $649. The laptop has a 13.3-inch screen and weighs under five pounds. The laptops are powered by Intel chips and run the Windows Vista OS. The DV3T supports up to 500GB of storage and 8GB of memory. The laptop comes with a six-cell battery that provides about four hours of battery life, or an optional 9-cell battery that provides 7 hours of battery life.

Other new laptops, including HP Pavilion DV6T, which starts $649, and Pavilion DV6Z Artist Edition 2, which starts at $949, include 16-inch screens and are loaded Armada M700 laptop battery with multimedia features. The laptops run Intel chips and come with the Windows Vista OS.
